Butoh legends Hiroko and Koichi Tamano are coming to Chicago for the first time for a 5-day workshop culminating in a performance at Links Hall. The Tamanos studied for more than ten years with Tasumi Hijikata, founder of Ankoku Butoh, who sent them to the US to bring Butoh to the West.  Their company, Harupin Ha Butoh Dance Theatre, was named by Hijikata and is loosely translated as: those who dance Butoh will achieve an awareness of being alive.( www.harupin-ha.org)

The Tamanos have lived in Berkeley since the late 70s and have paved the way for the first generation of American Butoh artists.  They plan to retire later this year and return to Japan where the emperor has declared Koichi a national treasure.

Through the workshop, participants will learn a variety of practices that explore an intensified, embodied presence using nature imagery, the imagination, and rigorous physicality.
